Shadow Wood Community Association Celebrates Historic Honors at 2025 CAI Awards Gala

We are proud to share that the Shadow Wood Community Association (SWCA) achieved an extraordinary milestone at the South Gulf Coast Florida Chapter of the Community Associations Institute (https://www.caionline.org/) Annual Awards Gala, held on Saturday, December 6, 2025.

“This was a truly remarkable evening for our community,” said Steve Chappell, President of SWCA. “Shadow Wood achieved a historic clean sweep—earning top recognition in all three major competitive award categories. This achievement reflects our shared commitment to excellence, transparency, and resident engagement.”

Community of the Year for the Second Consecutive Year

For the second year in a row, Shadow Wood was honored as Community of the Year, recognizing the collective efforts of residents, volunteers, and professional staff. This award highlights the association’s continued focus on proactive planning and resident-driven collaboration.

Notable accomplishments contributing to this recognition include:
• Fiscal Excellence - Achieving the significant benchmark of zero accounts receivable, with no accounts written off, an unprecedented accomplishment for a community of 1,481 homes.
• Environmental Stewardship - Becoming the first residential community in Estero and Lee County to complete certification under the National Wildlife Federation Community Wildlife Habitat Program.
• Community Partnership - Working collaboratively with the Community Development District to identify and fund improvements for the Lakes Revitalization Initiative, including the installation of critical littoral plantings that enhance both ecosystem health and visual appeal.
• Regional Advocacy - Board leadership actively engaging with neighboring communities and Village of Estero officials to advocate for responsible mitigation along the I-75 corridor, helping protect residents’ quality of life.

Board Member of the Year: John Barry

John Barry, Board Member and Treasurer, was named Board Member of the Year. John was recognized for his exceptional financial expertise and tenacity, which provided stability and clarity during complex financial challenges.

His contributions include guiding the successful transition to a new financial services provider following a critical third-party failure, ensuring stability for the community. He refined the community Reserve Study to provide clearer long-term financial planning and modernized banking and payment systems through the introduction of ACH and credit card options. Throughout these efforts, he maintained open communication with residents, fostering trust and confidence in the association’s financial stewardship.

Manager of the Year Lisa Luster

General Manager Lisa Luster was honored as Manager of the Year for her visionary leadership, integrity, and strategic approach to community management.

Lisa’s achievements include successfully managing the multi-million dollar renovation of both community gatehouses while completing the projects under budget. She strengthened staff morale and performance by improving benefit offerings and modernizing workspaces, supporting recruitment and professional growth. She also deepened relationships with municipal and business leaders through participation in the Leadership Estero Program and ongoing collaboration with Village of Estero officials.

A Shared Community Achievement

“This recognition is not just a win for a few individuals,” said Chappell. “It reflects the dedication, hard work, and collaborative spirit of our residents, volunteers, board members, and staff. Together, we continue to set the standard for excellence in community living.”

These honors belong to the entire Shadow Wood community. Thank you for your continued support, engagement, and commitment to making Shadow Wood an exceptional place to live!

Celebrating National Pizza Day at Shadow Wood Country Club

At Shadow Wood, we believe great pizza starts long before it hits the oven. In celebration of National Pizza Day, we are excited to share an upgrade that reflects our continued commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and flavor: our pizza dough is now made with premium imported, unbleached, unbromated high-gluten flour.

A Better Flour for a Better Crust

We recently introduced Roma Heritage High-Gluten Flour, a professional-grade flour with 14% protein, selected for its superior strength and structure. This flour allows our culinary team to create pizza dough that delivers:
  • A better crust texture
  • Improved dough strength to support hearty toppings
  • Enhanced rise, height, and structure
  • Better moisture retention, helping the crust stay fresh longer

The result is pizza crust that’s crisp on the outside, perfectly chewy on the inside, and sturdy enough to support every topping we throw its way.

Clean Ingredients, Thoughtful Choices

Choosing unbleached and unbromated flour reflects a deliberate focus on quality and wellness. This flour is produced without many of the chemical additives used in conventional processing, offering several important benefits:
  • No potassium bromate, an additive linked to health concerns and banned or restricted in many countrie
  • No chemical bleaching agents, such as chlorine gas or benzoyl peroxide
  • Minimal processing, aligning with a clean-label, ingredient-conscious approach
  • Naturally aged flour, which may retain slightly more of its natural nutrients
These choices support not only better baking performance, but also peace of mind.

Flavor You Can Taste

Beyond health considerations, unbleached and unbromated flours are widely preferred by professional bakers for their flavor. Natural aging allows the wheat’s character to develop gradually, resulting in a crust with a more authentic taste and no chemical afternotes. Its natural, off-white color is a subtle but honest reflection of its quality.

Celebrating National Pizza Day the Shadow Wood Way

Whether you love a classic Margherita or prefer your pizza piled high with fresh toppings, our new dough is designed to elevate every bite. This National Pizza Day, we invite you to taste the difference that better ingredients can make!

Supporting Our Jamaican Team Members in a Time of Need

At Shadow Wood Country Club, our employees are at the heart of everything we do. They are colleagues, friends, and an essential part of our community. When members of our team are impacted by hardship, we believe it is important to come together in support.

Hurricane Melissa, a category 5 storm, made landfall in Jamaica on October 28th, 2025. Because of this, many of our Jamaican employees were faced with serious concerns for their families, homes, and communities. In response, Shadow Wood Country Club members established the Jamaica Hurricane Relief Fund to provide direct assistance to our Jamaican associates and their families during this challenging time.

The response from our membership has been both immediate and deeply meaningful. More than 240 members have contributed to the Relief Fund, demonstrating a shared commitment to helping the people who contribute so much to the daily life of our club. While we recognize that hurricane recovery is a long-term process requiring many resources, this effort represents our members’ desire to offer tangible support and reassurance to our employees when it is most needed.

This fund is not only financial assistance, but it is also a message of care, gratitude, and solidarity. It reflects how strongly our members value the individuals who work so hard to make Shadow Wood Country Club a welcoming and exceptional place.

We extend our sincere thanks to the members who have given to the Jamaica Hurricane Relief Fund, and to all who continue to support our employees during this time.

To our Jamaican team members: thank you for everything you do for Shadow Wood Country Club. Your dedication, professionalism, and spirit do not go unnoticed, and we are proud to stand with you and your families.

North Course Renovation: A Strategic Refresh in Progress

As summer arrived in Southwest Florida, the Shadow Wood team began a significant new chapter, the renovation of our North Course. Much like the South Course project completed in 2024, this renovation reflects our ongoing commitment to excellence in course design, playability, and long-term turf health.

Over time, even the best-designed courses need adjustments. Turf becomes worn, bunker shapes soften, and tees that once felt comfortable may start to feel too small. After careful planning with renowned golf architect Rees Jones, we identified several opportunities to enhance the North Course, improving playability, turf health, and overall course aesthetics.

May: Preparing for the Transformation

We kicked things off in early May with a busy first week. Much of the effort was focused on stripping turf to prepare for new sod and sprigs. At the same time, we began expanding and realigning several tee boxes. Many tee boxes have been expanded and repositioned. Some were too small for the amount of play they receive, and others were not ideally aligned with their intended targets. These changes will give more space, better sight lines, and improved turf conditions throughout the season.

Like the South Course, bunker slopes and green surrounds needed to be stripped as well. If you've been around the course recently, you may have noticed that we leave turf intact along the edges of bunkers and steep features. That’s intentional because it helps protect the shape and structure of these areas during the renovation. Just before sodding, we’ll trim down those edges and lay new sod right over them.

We’re also installing new wooden bulkhead walls on select holes. These structural features reclaim playing space and improve drainage, and their clean, modern look aligns with recent work completed at the Preserve Course.

June: Turf, Tees, and Big Progress

By early June, we were well into the swing of things. Bulkhead installation continued, and more tee expansions took shape.

Perhaps the most important part of this project is the turf replacement. We’re re-grassing the course with Bimini Bermudagrass, a premium variety known for its dense texture, dark green color, and excellent durability under play. This grass establishes quickly, recovers well from wear, and provides a consistent playing surface year-round.

The process of installing new turf is detailed and precise. It begins with removing the existing grass, preparing the soil, and applying a soil treatment called Curfew to reduce harmful nematodes (microscopic root-feeding pests that can affect turf health).

Then, Bimini sod rolls are shredded into sprigs—small sections of sod with roots and soil attached—and planted into the prepared surface using specialized equipment. These sprigs take root and gradually form the new turf you’ll play on when the course reopens.

Bimini Sprig

July: Grassing Wrapping Up

As of late July, nearly all holes have been planted with Bimini sprigs, and the final holes are expected to be completed shortly. Once grassing is finished, our team will begin the conditioning phase, which includes:
  • Rolling and mowing new turf
  • Repairing washouts
  • Applying sand topdressing and fertilizer
  • Bunker touch-ups
  • Course-wide weed control and detailing
We are also working closely with architect Bryce Swanson from the Rees Jones design team, who continues to make regular site visits to guide the finishing touches.

When the North Course reopens, members can expect a noticeably enhanced playing experience. Tee boxes will be larger and properly aligned, offering better sightlines and more space to accommodate daily play. Bunkers will feature cleaner edges and improved surrounds, making them both more visually appealing and more playable. The entire course will be resurfaced with strong, healthy Bimini Bermudagrass, providing a consistent and durable turf.

We’re incredibly proud of the work happening this summer and thankful for the ongoing support of our membership. This renovation reflects our shared vision for Shadow Wood’s future: a club that continues to evolve, improve, and deliver an outstanding golf experience for all who play here.

Cutting-Edge Emergency Response System Enhances Safety on our Courses

Shadow Wood is proud to announce a new safety initiative that enhances emergency response times and ensures the well-being of our members and guests while enjoying our golf courses.

In partnership with Estero and San Carlos Park Fire Rescue, we’ve implemented a cutting-edge Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping technology that enables emergency responders to locate golfers faster and more accurately than ever before.

How it Works
Estero Fire Rescue has developed a GIS map featuring over 8,000 mapped access points across all 108 Lee County golf courses, including Shadow Wood. Fire departments have verified each access point through on-site walkthroughs and drive-throughs to ensure they’re usable in an emergency.

If a medical emergency occurs on the course, this system allows emergency crews to receive a real-time, computer-generated map pinpointing your exact location—whether you're on the fairway, green, or even a cart path.

What Does This Mean for You?
Using this map data, EMS and fire units are directed to the nearest numerical address and optimal access route. This results in reduced arrival times and more direct care when it matters most. The goal is response times under six minutes.

A Big Step Forward in Member Safety
The Safety Committee has worked closely with Estero and San Carlos Park Fire Rescue to make this innovative system a reality. We’re excited about the added layer of protection it brings to our community. Whether you're enjoying a quiet morning round or part of a large tournament, you can have even more peace of mind knowing help is just moments away, should it ever be needed.

Beyond golf, GIS mapping also gives fire departments access to vital information such as fire hazards and available resources, helping them make faster, smarter decisions during emergencies.

At Shadow Wood, your safety is always a top priority, and we’re proud to take this meaningful step forward in protecting our Shadow Wood community.

3 Reasons Why Toptracer is a Game-Changer for Golfers

At Shadow Wood Country Club, we are always looking for ways to enhance the experience for our Members, combining tradition with innovation to make the game of golf even more enjoyable. That’s why we are thrilled to offer Toptracer technology, a cutting-edge tool that changes how golfers of all skill levels practice and play.

Whether you’re a seasoned golfer looking to fine-tune your game or a new golfer eager to take your skills to the next level, Toptracer brings a whole new dimension to your time on the range. But here at Shadow Wood, we go beyond just practice—we create a full social experience with fire pits, TVs, cocktail service, and special events that make the range a favorite gathering place at the club.

Here’s why it’s a game-changer for golfers at Shadow Wood:

1. Instant Feedback for Immediate Improvement
Gone are the days of guessing how far your shots are traveling or relying solely on feel. With Toptracer, every shot is tracked with precision, providing instant data on ball speed, launch angle, carry distance, and more. This means you can make real-time adjustments, helping you dial in your swing with greater accuracy.

For our Members who have been playing for a while, this technology offers valuable insights into consistency and ball striking. For newer golfers, it provides an engaging way to improve without the frustration of uncertainty.

One of the best things about Toptracer is its versatility. No matter your handicap, it can help refine your game:
  • Lower handicaps can analyze their shot dispersion, work on shaping shots, and fine-tune their distance control.
  • Mid-to-high handicaps can develop more consistent ball striking, improve club selection, and build confidence in their game.
  • Beginners and prospective members can learn the fundamentals in an engaging, low-pressure environment. And because Toptracer saves your data, you can track progress over time, making your practice sessions more meaningful and goal-oriented.
2. A Fun, Social Experience

Toptracer isn’t just about practice—it’s about connection, competition, and creating lasting memories. With interactive games, skill challenges, and virtual rounds on world-famous courses, the driving range becomes a social hub for friends, family, and members.

Imagine competing in a long-drive contest, challenging yourself in a closest-to-the-pin game, or playing a round at Pebble Beach without leaving Shadow Wood! Whether you’re here for a casual evening or hosting guests, Toptracer adds a whole new level of entertainment to the club experience.

With cocktail service, the ability to play famous courses, and various interactive challenges, Toptracer has turned the range into one of the club's most exciting and social spaces.

3. Leagues & Special Events

Our leagues and special events bring our Members together in a fun, social, and competitive atmosphere. These events have taken the traditional driving range experience to a whole new level, offering the perfect amount of friendly competition while playing virtual golf on some of the world's most renowned courses.

Recently, our Members had a blast at our Toptracer Pro Bowl, a casual and entertaining event that combined golf with football, creating a lively atmosphere perfect for sports fans and golfers alike. The Toptracer Open challenged participants to a quick and friendly competition on the legendary Pinehurst No. 2 Course. For those who enjoy a team-based format, the Toptracer Scramble was a favorite, where members played a Net Scramble on the famous PGA National Back-Nine, fostering teamwork and strategic play. To welcome new members, we hosted a New Member Toptracer Mixer, an event that helped introduce them to the technology while creating an opportunity to connect with fellow golfers.

We are committed to providing the best golf experience possible, blending tradition with innovation to keep our members engaged and improving. Toptracer is just one of the many ways we continue to enhance our club, offering a fun, data-driven, and social way to practice and play. We invite you to experience it for yourself—head to the range, test it out, and see why Toptracer is changing the way we play at Shadow Wood!

Located in Zone C: Minimal Flood Hazard
Shadow Wood at the Brooks is in Zone C, one of the safest flood zones in Lee County. Classified as an area of minimal flood hazard, Zone C is determined to be outside the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) and higher than the elevation of the 0.2 percent annual chance (or 500-year) flood. This means that even in the most extreme weather conditions, flooding risks are exceptionally low. This classification has proven vital, as Shadow Wood at the Brooks experienced no flooding during Hurricane Ian (2022) and Hurricanes Helene & Milton (2024), three powerful hurricanes with the largest storm surge to impact Southwest Florida in recent history.

One of Shadow Wood at the Brooks most valuable features is its connection to essential infrastructure. Within one mile of the Shadow Wood Community's entrances are Lee Health Coconut Point and Estero Fire Department, which means power restoration happens quickly after a storm. Quick Access to Emergency Evacuation Routes
Shadow Wood’s location provides convenient access to emergency evacuation routes. This proximity ensures that residents can safely and efficiently leave the area if necessary or feel reassured knowing that emergency services can easily reach the community during a storm.

A Proven Record of Hurricane Resilience
Shadow Wood’s impeccable hurricane resilience speaks volumes about the quality of its construction and thoughtful planning. Despite enduring the extreme wind forces of Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Milton, the community, club, and homes suffered no structural damage or flooding. This history of resilience offers residents peace of mind, knowing their homes and surroundings are built to withstand severe weather.

5 Health Benefits of Playing Golf: Why It's Great for Your Body and Mind

At Shadow Wood Country Club, golf is more than just a game - it's a way of life. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a newcomer to the sport, playing golf offers numerous health benefits that contribute to both physical and mental well-being. Here are 5 reasons why hitting the pristine greens of Shadow Wood is great for your health.

  1. Physical Benefits: Golf engages various muscle groups, including your core, back, legs, and arms. The repetitive nature of the swing helps build muscle endurance. The golf swing requires a good range of motion and flexibility. Regularly playing golf can improve your flexibility, which in turn can reduce the risk of injuries. The sport also enhances your balance and coordination, which are critical components for maintaining physical stability!
  2. Social Interaction: Golf at Shadow Wood is a social sport. Playing a round of golf with friends, family, or fellow members fosters social interaction, which is vital for mental health. Shadow Wood offers many opportunities to meet new people and build relationships. Whether it’s participating in club events or tournaments or simply joining a group for a round, the social aspect of golf can enhance your social network and create lifelong friendships.
  3. Mental Health: Golf is not only good for your body but also for your mind. The concentration and focus required to play can help reduce stress and anxiety. The beautiful environment of our golf courses, coupled with the gentle pace of the game, provides an excellent opportunity for stress relief. The nature of the game and the satisfaction of a good shot can be very soothing, helping to lower stress levels. Being outdoors, surrounded by nature, also has a calming effect, contributing to better mental health. Studies have shown that spending time in green spaces can lower levels of depression and improve overall mood.
  4. Cognitive Function: The strategic aspects of golf, such as calculating distances, choosing the right club, and planning shots, help keep your brain active. Engaging in these mental exercises can enhance cognitive function and potentially delay cognitive decline in older adults. Remembering course layouts, yardages, and previous shots can help improve memory. Regularly engaging in these mental activities can contribute to better cognitive health and delay cognitive decline. For members of Shadow Wood Country Club, this cognitive engagement is further enhanced as they have to remember the workings of three different courses. Navigating through multiple courses requires additional mental agility, as players must recall distinct layouts, hazards, and strategies unique to each course, thereby providing an even more robust exercise for the brain.
  5. Vitamin D Exposure: Spending time outdoors while playing golf ensures you get a healthy dose of vitamin D from sunlight. Vitamin D is essential for bone health, immune function, and reducing inflammation. Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, which is crucial for maintaining strong and healthy bones. Regular exposure to sunlight through golf can help prevent conditions like osteoporosis and fractures. Just remember to wear sunscreen to protect your skin!
Shadow Wood is proud to offer our members not just a place to play golf but a place to improve their health and well-being. Whether you’re out on the course for a casual game or one of our competitive tournaments, remember that every swing contributes to a healthier and happier you. So, grab your clubs, hit the greens, and enjoy all the fantastic health benefits that golf has to offer!

Shadow Wood Country Club blended fun, flavor, and a hint of competition at the Top Tracer, Tacos, & Tequila social event. For those who joined us, we hope you had as much fun as we did. For those who missed it, here's a glimpse into the fantastic evening we shared.

The evening began with a Top Tracer social hour, where members gathered at the covered hitting bays to either watch or play in a "Closest to the Pin" competition. The air was filled with friendly banter and cheers as participants aimed for the prize. The Top Tracer technology added a modern twist to the classic game, tracking each shot with precision and displaying the results in real time.

Accompanying the competition was a Tequila Tasting and Margarita Bar. Members enjoyed sampling a variety of tequilas while munching on chips, salsa, and queso. The margaritas were a hit, providing a refreshing start to the evening’s festivities.

During the competition, members enjoyed a signature drink, the Ace Paloma. This refreshing cocktail, a twist on the classic Paloma, combined premium tequila with a grapefruit mixer, lime juice, and club soda and was garnished with a slice of fresh grapefruit. The Ace Paloma was the perfect way to refresh during the competition.

The tequila tasting continued in the Lakeside Room, featuring:

Mastering Doubles: Strategies from Shadow Wood’s Assistant Director of Racquet Sports, Joel Hampton

Doubles tennis is a favorite here, offering a fun and competitive way to enjoy the sport. Understanding the strategies and dynamics of doubles play can significantly enhance your game. I recently met up with our Assistant Director of Racquet Sports, Joel Hampton, to discuss his favorite tips and tricks for playing doubles.

Joel says that "doubles tennis requires strategic positioning and effective communication." Unlike singles, where baseline play is common, doubles players must excel at covering the net and coordinating movements. Clear communication is essential to prevent unforced errors and ensure efficient court coverage.

Effective Communication and Teamwork
Clear and consistent communication is the foundation of successful doubles play. Here are some tips to enhance your partnership on the court:
  • Use Verbal Cues: Simple calls like "yours" or "mine" prevent confusion.
  • Pre-Match Strategy: Discuss your game plan with your partner before the match.
  • Positive Reinforcement: Encourage and support each other.
Building a strong partnership requires time and practice. Regularly playing with the same partner can help you understand each other's strengths, weaknesses, and playing styles.

Positioning and Movement Strategies
Effective positioning is crucial in doubles tennis. Here are some of Joel's favorite strategies:
  • One-Up-One-Back: One player at the net, one at the baseline. This is the #1 strategy because it balances offense and defense.

  • Both at the Net: This strategy puts pressure on your opponents.
  • Anticipate Opponent's Shots: "Watch your opponents' body language and racket positioning to anticipate their shots," Joel says.
  • Maintain Court Coverage: Be aware of your partner's position and cover any gaps.
By mastering these positioning strategies, you can improve your ability to respond to your opponents' shots and maintain control of the game.

Serving and Returning Tactics
Serving and returning effectively can set the tone for the entire game. Here are some tips to enhance your serve and return in doubles play:
  • Serving Strategies: Joel suggests “mixing up the location of your serves.”
  • Coordinate with Partner: Communicate serve placement to your partner.
  • Return of Serve: Aim for deep returns to push your opponent’s back and set up offensive plays.
Strong serving and returning create opportunities for offensive plays and can disrupt your opponents' rhythm.

Offensive and Defensive Plays
To excel in doubles, you need a balance of offensive and defensive strategies. Here are some common plays to consider:
  • Offensive Strategies: "Dominate the net by closing in and using angles to create difficult shots for your opponents," Joel recommends.
  • Defensive Techniques: Keep the ball in play and wait for opponents' mistakes.
  • Transitioning: Move between offensive and defensive plays as needed.
Mastering doubles tennis involves practice, communication, and strategic play. We hope Joel’s expert advice provides a solid foundation to enhance your performance! Practice these strategies and apply them in your matches next time you hit the courts at Shadow Wood!

Golf Etiquette Refresher: 5 Guidelines for Respectful and Enjoyable Play

Brushing up on golf etiquette is crucial for a great time on the course at Shadow Wood Country Club. Whether you're a seasoned player or new to the course, observing proper golf etiquette is fundamental to ensuring a respectful & enjoyable experience for all!

These guidelines not only enhance our own enjoyment but also contribute to a friendly and respectful atmosphere on the course! Here are some key guidelines to keep in mind:

  1. Respect the Course: Our Golf Course Maintenance Team works hard to make sure our courses provide a challenging yet enjoyable playing surface. It's essential to show respect by taking care of the course as you play. When you come across divots, whether they're from your shots or others', take a moment to fill them with the divot mix provided. In bunkers, rake the sand after playing your shot to erase footprints and ensure a smooth surface for the next golfer.
  2. Respect the Green: On the green, promptly repair any ball marks you see. These are also known as pitch marks, can impact the putting surface if not addressed promptly. To repair a ball mark, use a repair tool or tee to gently lift the depression, working around the mark to avoid damaging the turf. Then, use a tapping motion to smooth the surface, blending it seamlessly with the surrounding turf. These simple acts not only maintain the integrity of the putting surface but also ensure a consistent experience for all players.
  3. Pace of Play: Ready golf is key to an enjoyable round for everyone. Ready golf is a concept in golf where players are encouraged to play promptly, without unnecessary delay, to keep the pace of play moving smoothly. Instead of strictly adhering to the traditional order of play based on who is farthest from the hole, ready golf allows players to hit their shots when they are ready, and it is safe to do so. Pay attention to your position on the course and keep pace with the group ahead. If you find yourself falling behind, consider ways to speed up your play, such as limiting practice swings or being ready to hit when it's your turn. Conversely, if you're consistently waiting on every shot, be courteous and allow faster groups to play through. This keeps the flow of play smooth and minimizes frustration for all players.
  4. Safety First: Your safety and that of others should always be a priority. Before making any shot, take a moment to survey your surroundings and ensure that no one is in harm's way. If your shot goes off course and poses a risk to others, immediately shout "Fore" to alert them.
  5. Honoring the Rules: Golf is a game of integrity, and adhering to the rules is essential for fair play. Familiarize yourself with the Rules of Golf published by the USGA, as well as the local rules for each course, and apply them consistently throughout your round. This includes understanding rules regarding ball placement, relief from penalty areas, and procedures for addressing rule violations. Playing within the rules ensures fair competition and maintains the spirit of the game.

By incorporating these principles into your golfing experience, you not only enhance your own enjoyment of the game but also contribute to a positive and respectful atmosphere for all players. Let's make every round at Shadow Wood Country Club a memorable and enjoyable experience for everyone involved!

Elevating Your Golf Experience: The South Course Re-grassing Project

If you visited the South Course in May 2024, you may have noticed a significant transformation underway—the start of a re-grassing project aimed at rejuvenating the course. While the sight of dead grass might raise a few eyebrows, it's crucial to grasp the profound significance and long-term benefits of this initiative.
First and foremost, let's address the elephant on the course – the dead grass. It's a sight that may initially cause concern, but rest assured, it's a necessary step towards enhancing the quality and sustainability of our playing grounds.

Re-grassing is a process where existing vegetation is killed off and replaced with new grass. The main goal of the renovation is to eliminate the older, outdated variety of turf and any noxious weeds. This includes eliminating the old 419 rough grass, Celebration Bermuda and Torpedo, Tropical Signal, and Goose grass. This clears the way for propagating Bimini Bermudagrass.

Bimini Bermudagrass is an improved hybrid Bermuda that forms a fine textured, dense turf with a beautiful dark green color and upright leaf growth. Its dense, rapidly spreading growth habit and quick injury recovery make Bimini one of the most durable turfs available.

Re-grassing the golf course involves several key steps for success:
  1. Apply Herbicide: Broadcast spraying to apply herbicide to healthy turf at the right height to maximize coverage and efficacy.
  2. Fertilize Existing Turf: Fertilize existing turf a week or two before herbicide application to promote rapid growth and enhance herbicide uptake.
  3. Re-apply Herbicide two more times.
  4. Commence Cultivation: Use our own in-house verticutters and aerifiers to scratch up surfaces. Proper cultivation is crucial for good sprig-to-soil contact.
  5. Sod any areas before planting sprigs: This includes bunker faces, collars, and steep lake banks.
  6. Apply Starter Fertilizer: Apply traditional starter fertilizer known as “pre-plant.” This provides nutrients through the intense watering process.
  7. Planting Bimini Sprigs: A contract company with special equipment slices in the sprigs and then rolls the surface.
  8. Irrigate Regularly: Irrigate lightly and frequently during daylight hours. It may look like a lake out there, but the immature sprigs need this type of irrigation for about two weeks.
So, why is re-grassing so crucial? Allow us to shed some light on the matter.

Re-grassing offers a unique opportunity to adjust and realign fairways, significantly enhancing both aesthetics and playability. Our primary goal is to elevate the overall playability of the South Course. By introducing new, resilient grass varieties, we aim to create smoother, more consistent playing surfaces that will take your golfing experience to new heights.

Although the South Course may not look its best now, rest assured that with our hard-working Golf Course Maintenance Team's proper execution, it will be back better than ever, with improved playability and aesthetics. Eric Ruha, Our Director of Agronomy, says, “My team is excited to take on this challenge and provide the Members with a great product this upcoming Season. The support from the Board of Directors, and the planning and coordination with our GM and Assistant GM has been smooth. Networking with local peer Clubs for best practices has been helpful as well. Bring on the Bimini!”
